What Is Thatch and Why Is It Important To My Lawn?

Thatch is defined as the decaying layer of dead roots, stems and organic material which lies between the grass and the root system. This is important because if the decaying layer of thatch cannot decay fast enough and starts to build up, it will prevent the water and nutrients from reaching the root system. When this happens, you run into more complicated issues. If the buildup of thatch gets to be excessive, the roots are unable to get enough moisture and become vulnerable to drought very quickly. Once the thatch dries out, it cannot get moisture easily which leads people to over water their lawn. This is just as dangerous since once the thatch becomes wet, it will harbor dangerous fungi which will destroy your weakened lawn.

Rehabilitate Your Lawn With Our Dethatching Services.

If your lawn has not been maintained, or your lawn has severe thatch buildup, dethatching is the best way to rehabilitate your lawn. Dethatching will remove the buildup of thatch and allow nutrients to once again reach the root system. Detaching will also prevent the buildup of dangerous fungi and allow diseases to spread in your lawn. Our dethatching services are performed in the early spring. Dethatching is only a service we recommend on a case-by-case basis, and is not performed on a continual, seasonal basis. It is strictly a rehabilitating measure we offer.

Let It Breathe - Core Aeration

Core Aeration is a great way to ensure a deep, strong root system which in turn will keep your grass healthy. Aeration involves removing small "cores" (the cores are 3/4" to 2" in depth and about 6" apart) or plugs from your lawn in order to remove thatch, loosen up the soil and allow nutrients and water to get deeper into the soil. It also allows more air to get into the turf as well. All of these things allow roots to develop longer, stronger systems. The end result is a thicker, stronger, healthier lawn.

Aeration is a seasonal service and is usually done during the fall season when temperatures are cooler. Here in Oregon , grass can grow up to an inch a week when the temperature is correct. Aerating your lawn during the fall will help you take advantage of these conditions and strengthen your lawn for the spring.

How to Choose the Best Lawn

How to Choose the Best Landscaping Company in thePortland Area.

When it comes to the lawn around your home, it is definitely an area that is constantly and prominently on display. Unlike the inside of your home, there is no way to hide a lack of lawn care maintenance. Because of its high level of visibility, it is all the more important to make sure to keep your lawn looking its best, as it is surely a reflection on the rest of your home to those passing by. For this reason, hiring a landscaping company is very beneficial. Depending on the company, their offerings of lawn services vary. Some provide landscape design while others perform lawn mowing, laying down sod, installing irrigation systems and sprinkler systems, and some even focus on developing fertilizer and weed control programs.

When it comes to choosing a Lawn company in the Portland area, you will want to make sure that you are choosing one that delivers lawn services that are not only timely but that also work well with the unique climate of the area. With the extreme temperature swings of the frigidly-cold winters and the sweltering-hot summers, your lawn will obviously require some specific tender love and care in order to keep it looking its best all year around. Such large temperature and weather extremes can really take their toll on your lawn. Therefore, you will want to make sure that the landscape company you hire is well-versed in tackling these kinds of challenging conditions.

One of the best things you can do when choosing a landscape company in the Minnesota area is to actually get a taste of the kind of work that they do. Beyond just finding out which specific lawn services they provide, it is important to actually speak with some references and, if possible, to see their work first-hand. This will give you an idea of the company's timeliness, professionalism, and most importantly, the results that they deliver.

Just like with hiring any kind of service provider, selecting a landscape company might take a bit of research. Getting an idea of the kinds of services and prices in the Portland area will give you a good idea of what to expect so that you can make an informed choice. At the end of the day, the exterior of your house says a lot about you. Therefore, enlisting the help of professional lawn services can help you put your best face forward.
